These new file formats were designed to be more efficient, more secure, and more interoperable than the previous binary file formats used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office.
In addition to the new file formats, Office 2007 also introduced support for exporting documents to PDF and XPS formats, making it easier to share documents with others who might not have Microsoft Office installed. Office 2007 also included support for the OpenDocument Format (ODF), which is used by some open-source office suites like OpenOffice and LibreOffice.
